hope that's OK. Thanks.

We are seeking people for drama reconstructions and interviews; specifically

BRAZILIAN ROOTS
EDUCATIONAL ARTS AND CRAFTS WORKSHOPS FOR 5 TO 11 YEAR OLD

by
Cristiane Darke
Tereza Araujo

Our workshops are designed to introduce children to Amazon Native history and traditions, rich Folklore tales and modern-day colourful and vibrant carnival.

We offer three different workshop themes:

Amazon Indians headdresses
This workshop is inspired on different Amazon Indians headdresses.

At the workshop we help the children design and make Indian headdresses.

Brazilian Frevo umbrellas
Frevo comes from the Portuguese word fervo, which means boiling. Frevo is danced using lots of movements and with one hand holding an umbrella.

The umbrella used for Frevo is decorated with bright colours, flowers, geometric designs, and colourful ribbons.

Brazilian Carnival masks
The workshop presents the ‘behind-the-scenes’ of carnival, exploring the manufacturing of its colourful costumes.

At he workshop we help the children design and make their own carnival masks.

Artists

We are both freelance artists with much experience working with children in festivals, and play projects organised by Stone Crabs. Our workshops are fully insured and run in accordance with OFSTED standards. We have both had recent police checks.

Material used at all workshops

Feathers, fabrics, glitter, paint, colour pencils, disposable cups, recycled plastic pots, different types of paper, dry beans, beads and glue: all materials that children like and are mostly familiar with.

Please contact brazilianroots@stonecrabs.co.uk for more information

SENHORA DOS AFOGADOS/OUR LADY OF THE DROWNED

Nelson Rodrigues

‘Brazilian magic’ – Time Out on Rodrigues’ Waltz # 6 (StoneCrabs, 2005)

“I wanted to be the only woman in this house; we’re alone, father, in an empty house.”

Written in 1947, with the North-eastern coast of Brazil in mind ‘Senhora do Afogados’ is suffused with Latin passion. At times humorous but always provocative, the Drummonds family are haunted by the murder of a dockyard prostitute.

The two younger daughters of Misael Drummond are drowned. That leaves only the eldest Moema, the eldest. Engaged to the ‘Fiancé’, Moema’s wish is to be her father’s only woman left in the house. In the course of the play, the mother, Eduarda, is forced by the fiancé to abandon the household. Misael faces up to his crime; The fate of Moema is to be resolved by the weight of her forbidden desires – who dares to judge?

Humorous scenes at the brothel juxtapose the bourgeois world of the Drummonds against the dockyard life of prostitutes, comb salesmen and diseased legs of the brothel owner.

As with most of Rodrigues’ works, the play sits on several levels of realism, symbolism and stylised structure to engage the audience in a dialogue concerning the darker human truths.
