I went away skiing in Borovets, Bulgaria. It was my second ski holiday after going to France the previous year.
In France I was pretty much a beginner even though I had lessons at MK Snowzone before I went. I remember how much my legs and abs were aching after the first few days because I was doing my best to stay on my feet and not spend the whole holiday on the floor! I was thinking how can I be aching this much with all the training I do?! I knew it was a different exercise and movement but thought my classes and gym workouts would get me 'ski fit'. I was wrong. After a few days picking myself up about 20 times and getting frustrated I started to really get into it and found a new love - skiing!
This year was different.
First of all I invested in my own Ski boots which set me back £300 as the hire one's from the previous year weren't comfy and didn't help me at all. This is the best £300 ever spent as they were very comfortable and were moulded to my foot shape. I would advise buying your own boots, you will save money in the long run from hiring them and the comfort factor is massive.
Then I set myself up a training plan to improve my skiing and ski fitness, I wanted to ski all day, every day without getting tired. I had learned from the previous year which muscles to train and the movement pattern in which to work them. Using the TRX and other pieces of kit I took the fundamental moves of skiing and worked on strengthening and conditioning.
I feel that my skiing definitely improved and by the end of the week I could easily of skied another week - skiing for 5/6 hours a day. And i'm not talking about rolling around on the green runs! I could go faster with more control, skiing down reds runs with ease. The pressure on your legs when you ski a red or black run is intense, but due to my training I felt good on every run.
I will be offering this ski fit workout to my guys so they can go from the Blues to the Reds or even Reds to Blacks! From skiing 3 hours a day to 6!
I wonder how many people out there trained for their ski holiday? And what did you do?
From my experience of working in gyms and members telling me that they are training for their ski holiday, I know they have been going the wrong way about it with the leg press machine!!
