In
an attempt to promote Brasilian Cinema and to feed the public
curiosity about Brasilian culture Something From Brasil was
created. This new venture is developing in four areas: exhibition,
education, co-productions and, in the near future, distribution
and sales of low budget films.
In 2005, Rose Chamberlain, in partnership with JungleDrums
Magazine, founded and was the director of Mostra Brasil and
New Brasil: The UK Brasilian Film Festival.
Mostra was staged in London’s Covent Garden at the Guanabara
Bar over 5 weekends in summer 2005. New Brasil: The UK Brasilian
Film Festival took place over five days in September at the
Old Truman Brewery in London’s East End, where the icon
to a new generation of Brasilian directors, Beto Brant was
the Special Guest and Vinicius de Oliveira, the boy lead from
Walter Sales’ Central Station was on hand to perform
a Q&A. More than 2000 people came to experience the 16
features and 30 shorts and lively events on offer.
Two months later, starting in Birmingham, another festival
was born paying homage to Brasil's cultural diversity and
its expression seen through cinema. Bianca Rezende, a filmmaker
from Rio de Janeiro launched and directed The Brazilian View
Film Festival. This short film festival then toured to London
and Brussels. Brazilian View delighted its public with a programme
of over 58 films, including animations, underground movies,
student films, documentaries and films from Brasil’s
new generation of filmmakers.
These events opened the way for the UK public to see Brasilian
films never before been screened in this country, united by
the same passion to promote and develop an audience for Brasilian
Films. Springing from this same passion we are developing
our programme for 2006.
On
22nd of April we will be having our Launch Party and we will
also kick-start the Something From Brasil: Shorts film festival,
aiming to show Brazilian culture in all its new cinematic
forms through short and medium length films.
Something
from Brasil is also preparing The 2nd UK Brasilian Film Festival
and building up a range of cinema events, talks and special
film nights. Something from Brasil believe in cultural diversity
and we are actively seeking to engage with others, who are
also keen to promote Brasilian cinema or who believe in cinema
as a potential tool for transformation and the expression
of cultural diversity.
